A Dreadful Calling
Shane Morgan has posted a thought-provoking treatise on the ministry of the Word on his blog, entitled The Ministry of the Word: A Dreadful Calling (A Puritan's View of the Pulpit). I heavily suggest, nay, I command you to read it. Something exactly like this ought to be read on the very first chapel of every semester, and every student ought to be required to sit through it for this message alone. Hurry and read it.

Ps. 29 is what my Youth Minister took me through before I preached my first pulpit supply:
3The voice of the LORD is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the LORD, over many waters.
4The voice of the LORD is powerful;
the voice of the LORD is full of majesty.
5The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars;
the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
6He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf,
and Sirion like a young wild ox.
7The voice of the LORD flashes forth flames of fire.
8The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness;
the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
9The voice of the LORD makes the deer give birth[c]
and strips the forests bare,
and in his temple all cry, "Glory!"
10The LORD sits enthroned over the flood;
the LORD sits enthroned as king forever.
For the SBTS prospective student conference last October, Dr. Moore gave a rabble-rousing similar address.
Dr. Danny Akin gave one similar as well back in '99 when I first visited (when he was dean of the School of Theology here). And I've heard Dr. Moore lower the boom on this issue too. But neither men (and these guys can PREACH) said anything that just blew me away like Shane's post did.
I'm gonna stump for SBTS a bit and say stuff like that is exactly what this seminary wants to instill in their students.
